Catch weight Introduced in AX 2012 (Process Industry)

With the process industry solution for AX the concept of Catch weight was introduced in AX.

The CW functionality was designed to deal with liquid inventory such as paint production where someone needs to track how many drums of an Item they have in stock but at the same time want visibility for example by litres.

But when it comes to dealing with tangible unit items such as tomatoes, fish, chicken, steel tubes, logs etc.. the statistics of this functionality working is weak (refer AX knowledge portal for PI). One of the things that would be nice to have is the functionality to price in both units... the Std AX unit and then the CW unit . Secondly, CW unit conversions should support the size/config/colour dimensions.  For example In Steel, you can have a tube or beam that comes in many standard and non-std sizes which requires the size dimension, but CW doesn't support dimensions, so this requires setting up a new product number for each size. again, you buy 50 units of a 25ft length tube. During receiving CW will say that you are receiving 1,250 ft of tubes.. There isn't any way to identify that though total length is 1,250 it's actually 50 units of std 25ft tubes. To track that you need to populate the serial number field everytime you receive the product (e.g. 25ft) but this could have been solved with the size dimension easily. So, as you can see there are various challenges with the process manufacturing functionality.
