New Project Budgeting Functionality in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3
On May 1st, Microsoft officially released to market the newest version of Microsoft Dynamics AX, their flagship global ERP software system. In addition to the ability to deploy Dynamics AX on Azure, enhancements to the Lifecycle Services toolset, and other general improvements, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 includes a number of new features in the Service Industries version of the application. In our current series of blog articles, we’re discussing some of the enhancements that are found in the Project Management & Accounting module.
In this blog, we’ll point out a new enhancement in the area of project budgeting. Dynamics AX allows you to budget both costs and revenue for a project, at any level within the project hierarchy. It also allows you to budget by all of the various project transaction types in Dynamics AX, such as hours (labor), expenses, items, and fees. This allows you to either get quite granular with your project budget, or to keep the budget at a fairly high level depending on your needs.
In the main budgeting screen in Dynamics AX, there have been some shortcomings over the years in terms of the usability of this screen and how the budget data is presented to the user. Users have historically only been able to view this budget data by transaction type. So we’ve actually had to modify this screen for some of our clients to provide additional ways to group and view their budget transactions in a way that is easier for them to consume.
In Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft has enhanced the budget control screen to allow you to now group and view the budget by additional attributes, such as Category Group, Category, and Cost Template. This will provide some enhanced usability when reviewing project budgets, as well as additional ways to slice and dice your project budget data. The screenshot below shows how users can now filter and group these transactions by these additional attributes.
