What’s new with Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations (Dynamics AX) Fall Release - Human Capital Management

Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations (formerly known as Dynamics AX) provides an embedded Human Capital Management solution that can help organizations more efficiently manage their workforce and their day-to-day human resource management processes. Microsoft has an active HCM development roadmap, and is heavily investing in building out the HCM module to offer best-in-class functionality.

In the 2016 Fall Release of Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, released November 1st, Microsoft added several new features to the HCM module, which includes the following.

  1. Performance journals – Before completing a review, you often gather information about activities or events that contributed to your success as an employee during the review period. A new performance journal provides employees with the ability to describe information about the activities or events that they completed during a review period. The performance journal collects this information, and then connects these activities and events with a goal or performance review to provide greater visibility to the reviewer around the employee’s performance.
  2. Creation of detailed goals – Users will now have more control over the content of the goals that you set. Employers can create measurements for goals, link the performance journal entries to the measurements, and attach and view documents for these goals. In addition, the goal document can be set up as a template and be reused at any time. Employees can add their own goals, managers can add goals for their teams, and HR team members can also add goals through these templates. In addition to individual goals, it is possible to create group goals for either an employee, a team, a position, a department or the entire company if needed.
  3. Good-bye “discussions”, hello “reviews” – The performance reviews, formerly known as “discussions” in prior versions of Dynamics AX, are now reviews, and are flexible enough to support both continuous feedback and more formal reviews. You can pull in active goals and post comments about them, as well as add sections for a review of your competencies and ratings. Additional sections are provided, where you can add or view measurements, performance journal entries, attachments, ratings, and signoffs that are related to the review. These reviews can also be stored as templates and reused for quick setup.
  4. Additional hierarchies and workflows – You can now associate a workflow with a position hierarchy, and may also modify the workflow steps to optimize the approval process so that it fits your business requirements. This allows an organization to define effective approval structures that fit the various reporting relationships within their organization.
  5. Workflow support for PINs in Employee self-service – The HR workflow capabilities have been expanded, and now include support for PINs. Employees may now add and edit a chosen PIN (personal identification numbers) to improve efficiency. Using workflow approvals, HR employees can review this information for completeness and accuracy before they add it to the employee’s record.

Microsoft plans many more enhancements in the HCM area in the 2017 releases (Spring and Fall), including improvements in candidate management, improvements in the on-boarding/off-boarding process, integrations to payroll providers and other 3rd party services, and much more.
