First impressions count, so make a great one.

We’ve been conditioned since the age of two or three to accept our first day anywhere is daunting. Funnily enough, some of the challenges we are confronted with at three and at forty-three, aren’t all that different. They include learning names, knowing where to sit and knowing the policy on when you can eat lunch. However, as we ‘grow up’ and enter professional environments it’s fair to say we become much more perceptive, perhaps because we have the option to run for the door. On our first day, we take early readings on whether our new start is a triumph... or the first stepping stone on the path to epic disaster. Sometimes we’re proven wrong, sometimes we aren’t, but first impressions always count. So how can you ensure your business makes a great one?

To be honest, a lot of it really comes down to the basics, that is, having a laptop to work on, having a phone that’s connected, an email address, and even having a desk. Yet so often, businesses are unprepared for these incredibly simple things. Adding to this, there is a lack of onboarding process and if you are so fortunate to have a laptop to work on, it may be a case of turning up, to be told ‘here’s the device, go’. Personally, I’m not so bothered by being left alone in the wild, however, for a lot of people the sheer prospect of this is terrifying and leaves new starters feeling incredibly unwelcome, not to mention unhappy from day one.

This isn’t necessarily the fault of Human Resources (HR). Whilst it is largely their job to ensure people are onboarded well, they often don’t have the systems to support the process (so go easy on them). HR is commonly left to operate across spreadsheets and multiple systems, with many HR Managers having to enter the data of a new starter into at least seven different platforms. This is where Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Talent can really help. A fresh addition to the Microsoft Dynamics Suite, Talent is the new must-have for your HR team. Imagine a first day where new starters turn up, open their laptops and have a central depository of company information at their disposal – from everyone’s names, to what they do, the company handbook, email addresses, org charts and policies.

What's more is that they can really get involved in company culture. Features might include where the best place to get a coffee is, whether the organisation is made up of dog or cat people. The world's your oyster when it comes to information in Talent and it's a great way to really make a new starter's first day, a great lasting impression.

We’re running a webinar on the onboarding capabilities of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Talent, as well as the performance management functionality on November 20, 2018. To find out more about what Talent can do for you, register now!
